JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Few will question the fact that Mississippi is the birthplace of America's music, and Tuesday Governor Haley Barbour unveiled new highway welcome signs highlighting that part of the magnolia state's identity.
Tourism has a $6 billion impact on Mississippi's economy and Barbour says music is a major factor.
"We believe that our music is one of Mississippi's greatest assets not just for people here to enjoy but we believe our music is economic development," said Barbour.
During the press conference at the Jackson-Evers International Airport, Barbour proclaimed this week as Mississippi Tourism Week, coinciding with national travel and tourism week which runs through May 17.
