MADISON, MS (WLBT) - A three-day celebration of 9 decades in business wrapped up Thursday for Primos Cafe restaurants.
Generation after generation has sat down to dinner at the popular eatery, or taken home their famous desserts.
“I was about five years old when we started,” said Kenneth Primos. “My dad came here from Gulfport.”
It was 1929 when Angelo “Pop” Primos opened his first store as a bakery on Capital Street in downtown Jackson.
His son, Kenneth, continued the legacy and age at 94 is celebrating the restaurant’s 90th anniversary.
“My Dad would make us quit school, come home and open a new restaurant,” said Kenneth. “Every time we turned around he’d build a new restaurant. I have three brothers and all four of us have been in the business. We all had a restaurant.”
Angelo died in 1979, but his dedication to family and business was passed on to his grandson Don Primos, who ran Primos Northgate.
He has since expanded to three locations: Flowood, Ridgeland and Madison.
He gives credit to his staff, who he regards as family.
“Treating people the way they should be treated and need to be treated,” said Don. “People responded to that and as a result I’ve had a lot of people who’ve been with me for a long time."
Great-granddaughter Mary Claire Primos heads marketing, branding and social media.
“It’s just such a legacy and it’s been honoring to get to be in the family and be part of it,” said Mary Claire. “So we’ve been celebrating all week long."
Memorabilia from restaurants over the decades greet customers taking part in the festivities at the Madison restaurant.
“We’re just pleased that everybody has given us so much success,” said patriarch Kenneth. “People of Jackson have been wonderful.”
Now, the Primos family is looking forward to a century in business..
