GRAMBLING, LA (WLBT) - Senior Chris Howell posted 19 points and 10 boards and recorded a double-double en route to Jackson State’s 65-63 win over Grambling State Saturday night in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
JSU improves to 7-13 overall and 4-3 in the SWAC, while GSU falls to 9-11 and 3-4 in conference play
Junior Venjie Wallis dropped 14 points but made it count at the free-throw line and was a perfect 6-of-6.
Junior and Jackson native Jesse Love came off the bench and scored nine points on 3-of-4 shooting, two of which were key three-pointers. In 18 minutes of play, junior Khalil Spencer added eight points and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field.
Senior Dontelius Ross played 37 minutes and scored four points and handed out four assists.
The Blue and White played suffocating defense and forced GSU into 18 turnovers, which was promptly turned into 13 points by JSU.
JSU dominated in front of the basket and scored 34 points in the paint and out-rebounded GSU 43-24. The Tigers also grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, which JSU turned into 19 second-chance points.
The Tigers also used a deep bench with 12 players earning playing time.
As a team, JSU shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the field, including an impressive 46.4 percent (13-of-28) in the second half.
JSU returns to the hardwood Saturday, February 2 versus Mississippi Valley State.
