JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A 10th grade English teacher at Forest Hill High School is the 2018-2019 Jackson Public Schools Teacher of the Year.
Adrienne McDowell was surprised with the honor Friday morning during class. She says she was honored to be nominated but never expected to win. She said all her co-workers at Forest Hill are committed to helping their students learn.
“To know that your peers think highly of you is one of the best things that you can feel inside," she said. "We work together, and we all work so hard. It’s not just me here who’s putting in the work, who’s staying late, who’s trying to give their all to these scholars. It’s all of us. We all work hard. So to know they see me as a hard worker as well, the same way I view them, then that was much appreciated.”
McDowell was given a gift basket that included an overnight stay at a local hotel and dinner.
“All I do is just come in, do my job, try to do my best to make sure my scholars know everything that they need to know so they can pass their tests. That’s really my only focus,” she said.
McDowell was once a student in Jackson Public Schools. She has been a teacher in the district for 11 years, including the two she has spent at Forest Hill.
