JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The addition of sports betting was a boom for Mississippi casinos, netting $14.8 million in profit in 2018.
Sports betting launched August 1st in Biloxi and Tunica. In all, 23 casinos took in over $157 million in wagers at their sports books in just the five-month period.
The numbers were first reported by ESPN in a story from Biloxi on Mississippi being the only state within college football’s biggest stronghold, the southeast, to legalize sports betting following the United States Supreme Court landmark decision in May.
ESPN reports it wasn’t all good for Mississippi’s sports books. The state’s coastal region posted back-to-back losing months on football wagers in October and November, including a $600,000 loss in October alone.
Mississippi remains one of only nine states to offer sports betting.
