59-year-old man shot to death in car on Coronet Place identified

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A 59-year-old man has been identified as the victim shot to death inside a car on Coronet Place Wednesday night.

According to Jackson police, they responded to a vehicle accident call around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they found a small white truck that had run off the road and crashed into the yard of a home.

Officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot injuries inside of the car. Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart identified the victim as 59-year-old Mack Pope -- Pope later died at the scene. Several holes were observed on the driver’s side of his vehicle.

Witnesses told officers that the victim’s vehicle was stopped in the road a short distance from the accident. A second, light colored vehicle was stopped close by.

Shots were fired and the victim sped down the road crashing a short time later. The suspect’s vehicle followed and several black men were seen running to the victim’s vehicle before fleeing the scene.

The suspect’s vehicle is only described as a small light colored sedan, possibly white or gold.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS(8477). Cash reward of up to $2,500 is possible if that information leads to an arrest.

This is one of three deadly shootings in Jackson Wednesday. Two men shot and killed each other late Wednesday night and Wednesday morning, a man was shot and killed on Robinson Street.
