JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson police are searching for the person who assaulted an employee at a Jackson convenience store, after he was caught stealing items.

It happened Monday night around 8:00 p.m. at the One Stop Food Mart on Northside Drive.

The victim of the vicious attack is speaking out, despite a painful beating at the hands of the shoplifter.

The man was beaten while working the cash register for a relative who stepped out for a few minutes. That’s when he says he locked the door on a man who tried to steal several items.

“He came inside and was blindly beating me," said the victim. “He got my baseball bat from my hand, he had four to five shots. He tried to hit me on the head, but I used my right hand to stop him."

The attacker was caught on the store’s surveillance cameras.

The victim’s arm is broken in two places. He’ll undergo surgery this week, and a metal rod will be inserted in his forearm.

“I said ‘don’t beat me, I will open the door if you want,’” the victim added.

The suspect fled the store, taking a phone and other items.

The pain from the attack runs especially deep for the male victim, who is a native of India and is just visiting the Jackson metro area for a few months to see his family. Store customers say the attacker is a regular.

Halfway around the world from his home, the man is trusting that Jackson police will find his attacker.

He said, “Everybody knows him, they can find him very quickly from my point of view, because every person who comes over there, they know him. Every person knows him.”
