"I truly believe this is a misunderstanding”: Mississippi State Senator arrested for DUI

OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Mississippi State Senator Terry Burton was arrested on a DUI charge. He is the number two man in the Mississippi Senate.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Burton was arrested Wednesday night in Oktibbeha County.

MHP responded to a one vehicle crash on US 82 around 9:12 p.m.

When they arrived on scene, they found a 2017 white Chevrolet Silverado in a ditch north of the highway. 62-year-old Burton did not suffer any injuries.

Oktibbeha County Sheriff Steve Gladney said bond for the Republican from Newton was set at $992.

Jail records showed Burton was officially charged with DUI 2nd offense and and failure to maintain proper lane.

Buton released a statement saying the incident was a “misunderstanding”, but did not elaborate as to why.

“I know firsthand what it is like to make a mistake and to accept the consequences for those mistakes. I respect and applaud law enforcement for always erring on the side of caution. I truly believe this is a misunderstanding.”

Burton pleaded guilty to DUI after a 2014 arrest in Brandon. He was charged with another DUI in Scott County in 2016, but was later found not guilty.
