VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating after a tow boat pushing 31 barges struck the Old Hwy 80 bridge at Vicksburg causing the barges to break loose.
This happened around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Several of those barges struck both the Old Hwy 80 and the I-20 bridge but it’s not believed that any barges sunk.
Harbor boats from Ergon Marine responded to calls for assistance and were able to move all the run away barges to the bank.
The Vicksburg Bridge Commission was notified of the crash and conducted a survey of the railroad bridge. At this time, there is no damage to either bridge and train traffic has resumed.
30 of the barges were loaded with either grain or coal. No hazardous materials were involved and no injuries were reported.
The U.S. Coast Guard will investigate the crash.
