ATLANTA, GA (WLBT) - Alcorn State’s season, win or lose, ends in the same city where it started over three months ago. And that’s just how they designed it.
The Braves will represent the SWAC as league champions Saturday in the fourth annual Celebration Bowl. They’ll face MEAC champion North Carolina A&T inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It’s a rematch of the inaugural Celebration Bowl held in 2015.
The Braves' season began September 1 with a 41-0 loss to Georgia Tech, also in Atlanta. Head coach Fred McNair referenced the season-opening loss to the Yellow Jackets Friday when stating his team did not have an easy road to where they are today.
“You just don’t get here overnight," said McNair. "You’ve got to take that long road. And these young men understand we didn’t take shortcuts. We did everything the right way. We did it the hard way."
McNair added, "Just to be here and get a chance for another national championship, it means the world to this university and this team.”
Mike Sands' coverage of the Celebration Bowl continues Friday night on the Fox 40 News at 9 and the WLBT News at 10.
