BIRMINGHAM, AL (WLBT) - The SWAC announced Wednesday the need to relocate the league’s football championship game to an on-campus location.
The SWAC Championship game was to be played Saturday, December 1st in Birmingham. According to a press release, it will now be played at the home stadium of the team “with the highest ranking that qualifies for the championship game”.
SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland explained the decision in the release. “Upon arriving at the conference office in September, it was brought to my attention of a potential scheduling conflict at Legion Field if the University of Alabama at Birmingham was to qualify to host the 2018 Conference USA Football Championship game.”
“When the probability to play the SWAC Championship game as part of a doubleheader at Legion Field started to become a reality, we quickly recognized that playing two championship games in one day would not be a viable option," McClelland continued. "The conference office then began to proactively seek an alternative site for the championship game... It was clear that sharing the venue with UAB on that day would diminish our attempts at achieving those objectives.”
Alcorn State currently boasts the best record in the SWAC. The Braves lead the east division at 5-1. Southern sits atop the west division with a conference record of 4-1.
The 2018 SWAC Championship game will still be played on Saturday, December 1st. Kickoff is at 3:30. The game is scheduled to be broadcast live on ESPNU.
