JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Tony Hughes is out as the head football coach at Jackson State.
JSU announced in a press release Sunday that Hughes' contract would not be renewed at the end of the season, while naming defensive coordinator John Hendrick as interim coach for the remainder of the season.
The Tigers lost at Southern Saturday, 41-7. The loss dropped their record to 3-4 on the season.
Hughes was in his third season at Jackson State. His career record as head coach at JSU is 9-20. Hughes was a well-regarded assistant coach at Mississippi State when Jackson State hired him to replace Harold Jackson following the 2015 season.
In a press release, Jackson State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson said, "I would like to thank Coach Hughes for his dedication and hard work to Jackson State University and the Jackson State football program. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
