JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The money is flowing out of the state this week, once again, as the Mega Millions and Powerball lotteries hit record payout levels.
Even though you have a better chance of being bitten by a shark, it’s still fun to dream about turning $2 into multi-millions.
Maybe this will be last time the state misses out on this revenue and the next time the big games reach hundreds of millions, Mississippians will be able to go to the convenience store down the street to buy their tickets.
The Mississippi Lottery should be up and running early next year, starting with scratch off tickets and adding the major games, like Mega Millions and Powerball later in the year. Forecast estimates predict the state will receive tens of millions of dollars from lottery proceeds.
Even though some people did not support a state lottery, the people who want to play are going to drive across the state line and spend their money elsewhere. When our lottery program is fully in place, the millions of dollars going to our neighbors will be invested here and go towards improving Mississippi for Mississippians.
It’s about time.
