TEMPE, AZ (WLBT) - Hugh Freeze is returning to coaching, though at an unexpected spot.

The former Ole Miss coach was named offensive coordinator of the Arizona Hotshots, a member of the new professional spring league, the Alliance of American Football. The Hotshots head coach is Rick Neuheisel.

The AAF was founded in March, and plans to kick off its inaugural 10-week spring season in February.

Freeze spent 5 seasons as head coach at Ole Miss before resigning July 13, 2017 after university officials became aware of a phone call made on Freeze’s university-issued cell phone to an escort service.

David Brandt who is a sports reporter for the Associated Press in Mississippi said this moves makes sense for Freeze even though there were rumors several SEC schools were interested in hiring Freeze to their coaching staff in 2018.

“This gets him back into coaching but he’s out in Arizona, he’s out of the spotlight," Brandt said. "He doesn’t have to be in the SEC country where the spotlight is going to be so harsh on him. It kind of gives him that baby step to maybe getting back to a big time coaching job.”
