MADISON, MS (WLBT) - The city of Madison is recognizing International Walk to School Day Wednesday.
According to the website, www.walkbiketoschool.org, this is a worldwide event recognized that involves people walking and biking to school on the same day. The website says that 40 countries recognize this day.
The Madison Police Department posted on social media that they will observe this day. They advised drivers to be careful around school zones.
The event began in 1997. It is part of a movement to ensure there are safe routes to schools for children across the world.
Next year, this day will fall on October 2 to avoid conflicts with the Yom Kippur observance.
