JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - This week is an integral part of the season for Jackson Prep and Jackson Academy.
Both squads are coming into this game undefeated, and both are racking up Madden level points. 52-0 and 47-0 have been scores that we’ve seen.
But according to head coach Larry Weems, the Patriots have been king of the hill in for over seven years now.
“They will be the champions until somebody else takes the trophy," said Weems. “They’ve earned it you know so far. It’s just up to the rest of us either to try and match that level or continue to, you know, play for second."
Jackson Academy hasn’t surrendered more than 14 points a game on defense this season. But those teams didn’t have one of the best players in the state of Mississippi in the backfield.
Jerrion Ealy is a name that Jackson Academy knows well. The Ole Miss commit has torched defenses for several years now, and is the focal point in this game.
Jackson Academy senior defensive end, Eli Ridgeway, says having an athlete of his caliber doesn’t worry the Raiders defense. It’s done quite the opposite this week.
“He’s a great player, great athlete, and a good guy, so we’re going to do everything we can to stop him," said Ridgeway. “It’s a little extra motivation with him being back there, so yeah. It’s business as usual but prep week, it brings something extra to the table. We’re excited for it.”
In the heat of practice, Coach Weems knows that his defense need to keep a cool head and simply execute this Friday.
“Defensively obviously try and stop him, we’ll try and be gap conscious and have fits hopefully good, and be good tacklers and be in the right positions, and you know that’s all you can do,” said Weems.
