Mayor Lumumba announces adoption of FY2019 Budget

Mayor Lumumba’s administration has successfully ended the fiscal year with a surplus of $7.8 million.

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba announceD Friday that the budget for fiscal year 2019 in the amount of $331,060, 476.00 has been adopted. This is a major win for the Lumumba administration as it will allow for a two percent cost of living increase for all city workers.

This has been achieved after only one year of Mayor Lumumba’s administration coming into office with all city workers on furlough. At that time, the City of Jackson faced a deficit of nearly $6 million and Mayor Lumumba’s administration has successfully ended the fiscal year with a surplus of $7.8 million.

The approved budget for FY2019 now allows for investment in new revenue streams and the creation of more efficient daily operations for the City with an Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP) to handle all of the core processes needed to run a city.

This will allow city leaders to make data-driven decisions from real-time information as they relate to finance, HR, procurement, Parks & Recreation, Point of Sale services and government transparency, just to name a few.

This year’s budget also invests in the consultancies necessary to leverage the city’s underground fiber-optic network to create one of the fastest municipal broadband networks in the country and ultimately create revenue for the City of Jackson. Mayor Lumumba’s administration is the first to invest in a budget for advertising, which will allow for greater communication with Jacksonians about the work being done and provide opportunities for economic and business growth within the City of Jackson.
