Florence schools lockdown lifted; police still searching for suspect.

FLORENCE, MS (WLBT) - The lockdown has been lifted at four Florence schools as police search for a suspect who was believed to have fired a gun at a nearby apartment complex.

According to Kristen Windham with Rankin County School District, Florence High School, Florence Elementary and Steens creek Elementary School were all placed on lockdown, but that lockdown has been lifted.

Windham said that students, teachers and staff members were never in any danger and the lockdown was strictly precautionary. All schools will dismiss as normal.

The school district appreciates the work of law enforcement agencies. The Sheriffs Department, Florence Police Department, and Highway Patrol were present at all times and will remain in the area for safety precautions.

Discovery Christian School was also put on lockdown, according to administrators.

There were reports of shots fired at the Indian Creek apartments. Florence Police Chief Richard Thomas says they are looking for a black man in a white t-shirt and jeans who fled into the woods when officers responded. MHP, Richland PD, Rankin S.O. in manhunt.
