NW Rankin travels to neighboring Brandon in our Game of the Week

NW Rankin looks to remain undefeated in our Game of the Week

FLOWOOD, MS (WLBT) - Northwest Rankin knows what to expect at Brandon Friday night: a physical, and often times nasty football game.

“I would expect it to be a very physical football game,” says Northwest Rankin head coach Toby Collums. “It has been every year that I’ve been here. We pride ourselves on playing a physical brand of football. I know Brandon does the same thing.”

“Very physical, and very heated. A lot of arguments,” says senior quarterback Jamari Jones. “After the play, just extra stuff cause you just want to win that bad. You just want to beat them all the time. Crosstown rivals, people you’ve grown up with.”

Physicality aside, our Game of the Week features two of the top wide receivers in the state: Northwest Rankin’s Jarrian Jones and Brandon’s Jonathan Mingo.

“Mingo is definitely a very good football player,” says Collums. “We’re going to have eyes on him everywhere he goes.”

Northwest looks to conclude their non-conference schedule a perfect 4-0, and be riding high when district play begins next week.

“It’s going to very tough, these upcoming games,” says senior linebacker Hayden Hill. “But it’s really going to tell everybody that we’re here and that we’re ready to play.”

“There’s a lot of good football teams in 6A, and Brandon is one of them,” says Collums. “We’re hoping we’re starting to climb that ladder a little bit ourselves. I know it will be a big time atmosphere and a good game.”

WLBT and Fox 40 will be at Brandon Friday with live previews at 5:00, 5:30, and 6:00. Then tune in during the WLBT News at 10 for highlights and a live report during the End Zone. Plus, Chuck Stinson will have a full recap on the Fox 40 SportsDeck at 11:00.
