CONSIDER THIS: Department of Corrections

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Some people may not have much sympathy or concern about the circumstances that led to their deaths since they were convicted of crimes, but as Governor Bryant said, they are just as important as anyone else in the state of Mississippi whose lives have been lost.

Department of Corrections officials initially dismissed the deaths saying the prison population was like any community with 19,000 people. However, that response is inaccurate. The make-up of the prison population is not identical to a traditional community and the real cause of some of these deaths Top of Formis questionable.

In addition to the alarming number of deaths last month, there is also the issue of inmate escapes.

Even though most prisoners are captured, that is not reassuring, especially if you live near the prison. A few hours, and certainly a few days, is plenty of time for an escapee to commit more crimes or take out revenge on people who played a role in the person’s conviction.

The FBI and the Department of Public Safety are now investigating. It is important that they share what they uncover, and the Department of Corrections takes that information to implement new policies and procedures to prevent inmate abuse and keep the prisoners where they belong… inside the prison.
